Abraham Asks Sarah to Tell the King He's Her Brother |
Genesis 20:1-18 The First Book of Moses Called Genesis |
Abraham journeyed from [there going] toward the south & dwelled between Kadesh & Shur & [stayed] in Gerar. [Again] Abraham said, [Sarah] is my sister & Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent [for] & took Sarah. But God came to Abimelech in a dream at night & said to him, [See,] you are a dead man, [because] the woman you have taken is a man’s wife. |
But Abimelech had not gone near her, he said, Lord, will you also slay a righteous nation? [Didn't Abraham] say she is my sister? She even said that [Abraham] was her brother. In the integrity of my heart & innocence of my hands, I have done this. And God said to him in a dream, |
[Yes,] I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart, that's why I have [kept you back] from sinning against Me. Therefore, I didn't [allow] the king to touch her. Now, therefore [return] the man his wife: for he is a prophet & he shall pray for you & you shall live. And if you [don't return] her, you shall surely die, you & all [who are yours.] Abimelech rose early & told his servants these things & the men became afraid. |
Abimelech called Abraham & [asked,] What have you done to us? [How] have I offended you, that you have brought this great sin on my kingdom & me? You have done [this deed] to me, that [shouldn't] have been done. Abimelech said to Abraham, What [did you see,] that you have done this thing? Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely, the fear of God isn’t in this place & they would kill me for my wife’s sake. And she [truly] is my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother & she became my wife. |
It [happened,] when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I [asked] her, Do this kindness [for] me & say I’m your brother at every place that we come [to.] And Abimelech gave Abraham sheep, oxen & [male & female] servants & restored Sarah, his wife, to him. Abimecheh said, [Look,] my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you. |
[The king] said to Sarah, [Look,] I have given your brother 1,000 pieces of silver. See, [for] you, he [concealed] the eyes [from offense] of all [who] are with you & all others. Thus, you are [justified.] So, Abraham prayed to God & God healed Abimelech, his wife & his maidservants & they [bore] children, [because] the Lord had closed up the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. |
