Jacob’s Sons Taking Revenge for Their Sister Being Defiled |
Genesis 34:1-31 The First Book of Moses Called Genesis |
When Dinah, [the grown] daughter Leah [bore] to Jacob [God renamed Jacob, Israel,] went out to see the daughters of the land. When Shechem, son of Hamor, the Hivite, [a] prince of the country, saw [Dinah,] he took her & lay with her & defiled her. His soul [yearned for] Dinah, [Jacob's] daughter & loved [her] & spoke kindly to [her.] |
Sheshem [spoke] to his father, Hamor, saying, Get me this [young woman] to [be my] wife. [Jacob/Israel] heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter. Now his sons were with the cattle in the field & Jacob held his peace until they [came.] And Hamor, [Shechem’s] father, went out to [speak] with [Jacob/Israel.] |
And [Jacob's] sons came out of the field, when they heard it & the men were grieved & very [angry,] because [Shechem] had done such a [disgraceful thing] in Israel, by lying with Jacob's daughter, which [shouldn't] be done. Hamor [told] them, The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. I pray [that] you give her [to] him to [be his] wife. |
You can make marriages with us & give your daughters ro us & take our daughter [for] you. And you shall dwell with us. The land shall be before you. Dwell & trade [in the land] & get possessions [for] you [in it.] And Shechem [asked] her father & brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes & I will give [whatever] you shall say to me. Ask me [for] a dowry & a gift & I will give you according to [what] you shall say to me: but give me the [young woman to be my wife.] |
And [Jacob's] sons answered Shechem & Hamor, his father, deceitfully, because [Shechem] had defiled Dinah, their sister. [Her brothers] said to them, We can’t do this thing, to give our sister to [someone who] is uncircumcised, for that is a [disgrace] to us. But we will consent to you: If you will [like] we [are] & every male of you [is] circumcised. |
Then, we will give our daughters to you & we will take your daughters to us & we will become one people. But if you won't [listen] to us, to be circumcised; then we will take our daughter & we will be gone. |
Their words pleased Hamor & Shechem, [Hamor's] son. And the young man [didn't decline] to do [this] thing, because [Shechem delighted in Dinah,] Jacob's daughter & he was more honorable than all the house of his father. |
And Hamor & Shechem, his son, came to the gate of their city, saying, These men are [peaceful] with us; therefore let them dwell in the land & trade [in it,] for it is large enough for them. |
Let us take their daughters for wives & let us give them our daughters. Only [on this condition] will the men consent to dwell with us [as] one people, if every male among us is circumcised, [like] they are circumcised. Let’s consent to them & they will dwell with us. [Won't] all their cattle & every [animal] of theirs [shall] be ours? |
All [males who] went out of the gate of the city, [paid attention] to Hamor & shechem, his son & [got] circumcised. It [happened] on the 3rd day, When they were sore [after their circumcision,] 2 of [Jacob's] sons, Simeon & Levi, Dinah’s [brothers,] each took [their] sword & came boldly upon the city [killing] all the males. |
They [killed] Hamor & Shechem, his son with the edge of the sword & took Dinah out of Shechem’s house & [left.] [Jacob’s] sons came upon [those] slain [plundered] the city; because their sister had been defiled. They took their sheep, oxen, [donkeys] & [what] was in the city & in the [fields] & all their wealth & took captive the wives & their little ones & [plundered] all that was in the house. |
Jacob said to Simeon & Levi, You have troubled me & make me stink among the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites & Perizzites. [We are] few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me & kill me & my [household] & I would be destroyed. [Jacob’s sons replied,] Should he deal with our sister [like a] harlot? |
