Elijah Foretells the Drought to Ahab |
1 Kings 17:1-24 1 Kings [in Smaller Chunks] |
And Elijah, the Tishbite, who was [from] the inhabitants of Gilead, said to [king] Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel [Lives,] before Whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain [all] these years [of drought,] but according to my word. |
The Word of the Lord came to [Elijah] saying, Get [yourself] [from] [here,] & turn [yourself East,] & hide yourself by the Brook Cherith, that is [in front of the] Jordan [River.] It shall [happen,] that you [shall] drink [from] the brook; & I have commanded the ravens to feed you there. |
So, [Elijah] went & did according to the Word of the Lord. For [Elijah] went & [stayed] by the Brook [of] Cherith, that is [in front of the] Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread & [meat:] in the morning & the evening & [Elijah] drank [from] the Brook. And it [happened] after a while, the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. |
The Word of Lord [God] came to [Elijah] saying, Arise, & get [yourself] to Zarephath, [that] belongs to Zidon, [a.k.a. Sidon,] & [live] there. [See,] I have commanded a widow woman there to [feed] you. So, [Elijah] arose, & went to Zarephath. |
And when [Elijah] came to the [city's] gate, [he] [saw a] widow woman was gathering sticks there; & he called to her, & said, I pray [that] you [get] me a little water in a vessel, [a.k.a. jar, so] I may drink. |
And as she was going to [get] it, [Elijah] called to her, & said, I pray [that] you bring me a [piece] of bread in your hand. And she said, As the Lord your God [Lives,] I [don't] have a cake, but [only] a handful of meal, [a.k.a. flour,] in a barrel, & a little oil in a [jug.] |
[Look,] I am gathering 2 sticks, so I may go in & [prepare] it for me & my son, [so] that we may eat it, & die. And Elijah said to her, [Don't be fearful.] Go & do as you [have] said: but make me a little cake [of it] 1st, & bring it to me. |
[Afterwards,] make [1] for you & your son. For the Lord God of Israel [said this,] The barrel of [flour] [won't go empty,] & neither will the [jug] of oil fail, [a.k.a. run out,] until the day that the Lord [sends] rain upon the earth. |
And she went & did according to [what] Elijah [said,] & she, [Elijah,] & her [household ate] [from it] many days. And the barrel of [flour, didn't go empty] & neither did the [jug] of oil [run out,] according to the Word of the Lord, [that] He [spoke] by Elijah. |
And it [happened] after these things, that the [widow's] son fell sick. And his sickness was so [severe,] that there was no breath left [within] him. And she said to Elijah, O you man of God, what [do] I have to do with you? [Have] you come to me, to [bring] my sin to remembrance, & to [kill] my son? |
And [Elijah answered] her, Give me your son. And [Elijah] took him [from] her [arms,] & carried him up into [the] loft, where he [stayed,] & laid him upon his own bed. And [Elijah] cried [out] to the Lord, & said, O Lord my God, [have] You also brought evil upon the widow with whom I [stay,] by [killing] her son? |
And [Elijah] stretched himself upon the child 3 times, & cried [out] to the Lord, & said, O Lord my God, I pray You, let this child's soul [return] to him again. And the Lord heard [Elijah's] voice; & the soul of the child [returned] to him again, & he revived. |
And Elijah took the child, & brought him [from] the [bedroom,] & down into the house, & delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, See, your son [lives.] And the woman said to Elijah, Now, by this, I know that you [are] a man of God, & the Word of the Lord in your mouth is Truth. |
