Paul Gets to Defend Himself Before Felix, the Governor |
Acts 24:1-27 The Acts of the Apostles [in Smaller Chunks] |
And after 5 days, Ananias, the high priest, [came down] with the elders, & a [good speaker] named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul. And when he was called [forward,] Tertullus began to accuse [Paul,] saying, Most Noble Felix, [since] we enjoy great [peace] by you, & by your providence, [a.k.a. foresight,] very worthy deeds are done to this nation, & in all places, & we always accept it with all thankfulness. |
[However, so] that [I'm] not tedious, [a.k.a. boring] to you [anymore,] I pray [that] you [in] your [mercy will] hear a few words [from] us. For we have found this man [to be] a pestilent fellow, [a.k.a. like a plague that spreads,] & a mover of sedition, [a.k.a. someone who insights riots,] among all the Jews, throughout the world. |
And a ring leader of the sect, [a.k.a. religious beliefs,] of the Nazarenes, who [has] also gone [around] to profane, [a.k.a. defile,] the temple, & whom we took & would have judged according to our Law. [Acts 21:28-29 Crying out, Men of Israel, help. This is the man, [in] this place, [who teaches] against the people [of the Jews,] & the Law [of Moses, to] all men, everywhere. [Furthermore,] [he has] also brought the Greeks, [a.k.a. Gentiles,] into the temple, & has [defiled] this Holy Place. (For they had [previously] seen [Paul] in the city [of] Trophimus, with an Ephesian, whom they supposed Paul had brought into the temple.)] |
But the chief captain, [a.k.a. commander,] Lysias came upon us, & took [Paul] away out of our hands with great violence, & [commanded Paul's] accusers to come to you, of whom [you] [by examining, may] yourself [gather] knowledge [about] all these things, [of which] we accuse him. |
And the Jews also [agreed,] saying that these things were so, [a.k.a. accurate.] Then, Paul answered, after the governor had [motioned] for him to speak. [Since,] I know that you have been a judge to this nation [for] many years, I [even] more cheerfully answer for myself, [so] that you [may] understand, that [it's only been] 12 days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship. |
And neither [did] they [find] me disputing in the temple with any man, [nor stirring] up the people, in [either] the synagogues or in the city. Neither can they prove the things [of which] they now accuse me. |
But I confess this to you, that I worship the God of my [forefathers,] believing all things [that] are written in the Law, & in the [book of] the prophets, & [according to] [this] Way. [John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I Am the Way, The Truth, & the Life. No man [comes] to the Father, [except] by Me.] |
Which they call heresy, [a.k.a. a contradicting belief.] [Acts 26:22-23 Therefore, having [received] help [from] God, & I continue [until] this day, witnessing to both [the:] [powerless & powerful,] saying, [only those] things [that] the prophets, & Moses [said] should [happen.] That Christ [would] suffer, & that He [would] be the 1st, [Who would] rise from the dead, & [would show] Light to the people, & to the Gentiles.] |
And [I] have hope [in] God, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just, & the unjust which they, themselves, also allow,. [Revelation 11:17-18 Saying We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, [Who Is, Who Was, & Who Is] to come. Because You [have] taken Your great power [upon Yourself,] & [have ruled.] And the nations were angry, & Your wrath [has] come & the time the dead, [so] that they should be judged, & that You [should] give reward to: Your servants, the prophets; saints; & [those, who] fear, [a.k.a. respect,] Your Name, & [the powerless & powerful;] & [should] destroy [those, who] destroy, [a.k.a. devastate,] the earth.] |
And I exercise myself, [in this,] & always have a conscience [without] offence, toward: God & men. Now, after many years, I came to bring alms, [a.k.a. money for the poor,] & offerings to my nation. [When some] Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, [without:] a multitude [or] a riot. |
[It's those] who [should] have been here [in front of] you, & object, if they had [anything] against me. Or else, let these same [who are] here say, if they have found any evil [deeds] [done by] me, while I [stand in front of] the council. |
[It's only because] I cried [out] standing among them, [about] the resurrection of the dead, [that] I am called [into] question this day. [Acts 23:6-10 But when Paul [was aware] that one part [of them] were Sadducees, & the other Pharisees, [Paul] cried out in the council, Men & Brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee, [with] the hope [of the] resurrection of the dead, & I am called [into] question. And when [Paul] had said [this,] there arose [an argument,] between the Pharisees & the Sadducees. And the multitude was divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, & neither [angels,] nor [spirits: but the Pharisees confess, [a.k.a. acknowledge,] both. And there was a [large] [out] cry, & the scribes [who] were [Pharisees,] arose & [quarreled,] saying, We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or an angel [has] spoken to him, let us not fight against God.] |
And when Felix heard these things, having more [thorough] knowledge of that Way. [Acts 9:2 And [Saul] desired letters from [the high priest,] [to take] to the synagogues [in] Damascus, [so] that If he found any [who followed] this Way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound into Jerusalem.] |
[Felix] deferred, [a.k.a. postponed,] them, & said, When Lysias, the [commander comes] down, I will know [more thoroughly about] your matter. And [Felix] commanded a Centurion to keep, [a.k.a. guard,] Paul, & to let him have [some] liberty, [a.k.a. freedom.] And that [Paul] shouldn't forbid [any] of his [acquaintances] to minister, or come to him. |
And after [some] days, when Felix came with his wife, Drusilla, [who] was a [Jew,] he sent for Paul, & heard him [about] [his] faith in Christ. And as [Paul] reasoned, [a.k.a. logically discussed, about:] righteousness; temperance, [a.k.a. moderation in all things;] & [the] Judgment to come, Felix trembled & [said,] Go [on] your way, for [now.] When I have a [more] convenient [time,] I will call for you. |
[Felix] also hoped that [some] money should have been given [to] him [by] Paul, [so] that he might [loosen, a.k.a. release,] him. [For this reason, Felix] sent for [Paul] [more] [often,] & [talked] with him. But after 2 years, Porcius Festus came, [a.k.a. proceeded,] to Felix' [position.] And willing to [satisfy] the Jews, Felix left Paul bound. |
