Ahab Wants Naboth's Vineyard |
1 Kings 21:1-29 1 Kings [in Smaller Chunks] |
It [happened,] after these things, that Naboth, the Jezreelite, had a vineyard in Jezreel, [next to] the palace of Ahab, [Samaria's] king. And Ahab [spoke] to Naboth, saying, Give me your vineyard, [so] that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is [close] to my house. And I will give you for it, a better vineyard than it [is,] or, if it [seems] good to you, I will give you the [value] of [the vineyard,] in money. |
And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord [forbids] me, that I should give the inheritance of my [forefathers] to you. And Ahab [returned] to his house [saddened,] & displeased, because of the [words that] Naboth, the Jezreelite, had spoken to him, I won't give you the inheritance of his [forefathers.] |
And [Ahab] laid [himself] down upon his bed, & turned his face away, & [wouldn't] eat [any] bread. But Jezebel, his wife, came to him, & said, Why is your spirit so sad, that you [won't eat] [any] bread? |
And [king Ahab told] her, Because I [spoke] to Naboth, the Jezreelite, & said to him, Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it [pleases] you, I will give you another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give you my vineyard. |
And his wife, Jezebel, said to [Ahab, Don't] you now govern the kingdom of Israel? Arise, & eat bread, & let your heart be [happy.] I will give you the vineyard of Naboth, the Jezreelite. |
So, [Jezebel] wrote letters in Ahab's name, & sealed them with his seal, & sent the letters to the elders, & nobles, [who] were in his city, [where] Naboth [lived.] In the letters, [Jezebel] wrote, saying, Proclaim a fast, & [put] Naboth [in a] high [place of respect] among the people. |
And [put] 2 [wicked] men [in front of Naboth,] to [testify] against him, saying, You [blasphemed] God, & the king. And then, carry him out, & stone him, [so] he may die. |
And the men of his city, even the elders & nobles, who [resided] in his city, did as Jezebel [requested,] [like] it was written in the letters [that] she had sent them. They proclaimed a fast, & [put] Naboth [in a] high [place of respect,] among the people. |
And the two [wicked] men came in there, & sat [in front of Naboth & testified] against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth [blasphemed] God, & the king. Then, they carried [Naboth] out of the city, & stoned him, & he died. |
Then, they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth [has been] stoned, & is dead. And it [happened,] when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, & was dead, [she] said to Ahab, Arise, & take possession of [Naboth's] vineyard, [that] he refused to give you for money. For Naboth isn't alive, but [is] dead. |
And it [happened,] when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab rose up & [went] down to [Naboth's] vineyard to take possession of it. And the Word of the Lord came to Elijah, the Tishbite, [a.k.a. prophet,] saying, Arise, & go down to meet Ahab, [Israel's] king, [who] is in Samaria. |
[Look,] he is in the vineyard of Naboth, [where] he [has] gone down to possess it. And you [shall say] to [Ahab,] The Lord [says this, Have] you killed, & also taken possession? |
And you [shall say] to him, The Lord [says this,] In the place where [the] dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall lick your blood, even yours. And Ahab said to Elijah, [Have] you found me, O my enemy? |
And [Elijah] answered, I have found you, because you have sold yourself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. [Look,] I will bring [calamity] upon you, & will take away your [descendants,] & cut off [all] the [males] from Ahab, & [those who are] shut up & left in Israel. |
And [they] will make your house like the [houses] of: Jeroboam, [Nebat's] son, & Baasha, [Ahijah's] son, for [provoking] Me to anger, & [causing] Israel to sin. [1 Kings 12:28-30 [Upon which,] king [Jeroboam] took counsel, & made 2 calves of gold, & said to [the Israelites,] It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem [to sacrifice.] |
[See,] your gods, O Israel, [that] brought you up out of the land of Egypt. And [Jeroboam put] one [gold calf] in BethEl, & the other he put in Dan.] |
And the Lord also [spoke about] Jezebel, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. The dogs shall eat him, [from] Ahab, [who dies] in the city. and him, [who dies] in the field, the [birds] of the air shall eat. |
But there was [no one similar] to Ahab, [who was] stirred up [by] Jezebel, his wife, [who sold] himself to [do such] wickedness in the sight of the Lord. |
And [king Ahab behaved] very abominably [by:] following idols, [like] all [the] things the Amorites did, whom the Lord cast out before the children, [a.k.a. people,] of Israel. |
And it [happened,] when Ahab heard [these] words, he [tore] his clothes, & put sackcloth upon his [skin,] & fasted, & lay in sackcloth, & [walked timidly.] |
And the Word of the Lord came to Elijah, the Tishbite, saying, [Do] you [see] how Ahab [humbles] himself before Me? Because [Ahab humbles] himself before Me, I won't bring the [calamity] [upon him] in his [life,] but [during] his son's [life,] I will bring the [calamity] upon his house. |
