The People in Lystra Think Paul & Barnabas are gods |
Acts 14:1-28 The Acts of the Apostles [in Smaller Chunks] |
And it [happened] in Iconium, that [Paul & Barnabas] both went together into the synagogue of the Jews. And [spoke] so that a [large] multitude of both: Jews & also Greeks, [a.k.a. Gentiles,] believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up, [a.k.a. instigated,] the Gentiles, [to turn] their minds against the brethren, [a.k.a. fellow-believers.] |
Therefore, they [lived] [there a] long time, speaking boldly [about] the Lord, & [who] gave testimony to the grace of [God's] Word, & [they were] granted signs & wonders, [a.k.a. Miracles,] to be done by their hands. [Acts 9:32-35 And it [happened,] as Peter passed throughout all quarters, [a.k.a. Regions,] he also came down to the saints, [a.k.a. Christians, who lived] in Lydda. And [Peter] found there a man named Aeneas, [who] was [paralyzed] & had kept [to] his bed 8 years. And Peter said to him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ [makes] you whole. Arise, & make your bed. And [Aeneas] immediately arose. And all, [who] dwelt at Lydda, & Saron, saw [Aeneas,] & turned to the Lord.] |
But the multitude of the city was divided. And part [agreed] with the Jews, & part [agreed] with all the apostles. And [at the same time,] an assault [plan] was made there, both [by] the Gentiles, & also [by] the Jews, [along] with their rulers, to [treat] them [spitefully,] & to stone them. |
They were [aware] of it, & fled to Lystra & Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, & to the region that lies [all around] [there.] And a certain man [in] Lystra sat there, [lame] in his feet, who had never walked, being a cripple from [birth.] The same [man] heard Paul speak; who [steadily watched the man,] & [realized] that he had faith, to be healed. *[Paul] said with a loud voice, Stand upright on your feet. And he leaped [up] & walked. [Isaiah 35:6 *Then the lame man shall leap [like] a [deer,] & the tongue of the [mute] shall sing. For waters shall break out in the wilderness, & streams in deserts.] |
And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the [Lycaonian language,] The gods [have] come down to us in the likeness of men. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; & [called] Paul, Mercurius, because [Paul] was the [main] speaker. |
Then [Jupiter's] priest, [who] was [in front of] their city, brought oxen & garlands to the gates, & would have [offered sacrifices] with the people. When the apostles, Paul, & Barnabas, heard of [this,] they [tore] their clothes, & ran in among the people, crying out, saying, Sirs, why do you [do] these things? We are also men, [having similar] passions [as] you, & preach to you, that you should turn [away] from these vanities to the Living God, [Who] made: heaven, the earth, the sea, & all things that are [in there.] [Isaiah 44:9 [Those, who] make a [carved] image, all of them are vanity. And their [delicacies are] not [beneficial.] And they, [a.k.a. idols,] are their own witnesses. They [don't] see, nor [do] they know, that they may, [a.k.a. should] be ashamed.] |
[God,] Who in [previous] times, [allowed] all nations to walk, [a.k.a. follow,] in their own ways. [2 Kings 17:16-18 And they all left the commandments of the Lord their God, & made [themselves molded] images, even 2 calves, & made a grove, & worshiped all the host, [a.k.a. stars & constellations] of heaven, & served Baal. And they caused their sons & daughters to [go] through fire, & used divination, & enchantments, & sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. Therefore, the Lord was very angry with Israel, & removed them out of His sight. There [were] none left, but only the tribe of Judah.] |
[However, God didn't leave] Himself without a witness, in that, He did good, & gave us rain from heaven, & [plentiful] seasons, filling our heart with food & gladness. [Acts 17:24-27 God, [Who] made the world, & all things [in it; since] He is that Lord of heaven & earth & [doesn't live] in temples made with hands. Neither is [He] worshiped with men's hands, as [if] He needed anything, [since] He [gives] life & breath to all things. And [God] [has] all nations of men made of one blood, to [live] on the [surface] of the earth. And [He] has determined the appointed times, & [boundaries] of their habitation, [a.k.a. residence, beforehand, so] that they may seek the Lord, if [perhaps] they might feel, [a.k.a. grope for] Him, & find Him, [although] He [isn't] [very] far from everyone of us.] |
And with these sayings, they [were] [scarcely] [able to] [restrain] the people, [who] hadn't done [the] sacrifice to them. And having stoned Paul, [some] of the Jews came [there] from Antioch, & Iconium, who persuaded the people, [to] [draw Paul] out of the city, supposing [Paul] had been dead. |
[However,] as the disciples stood [around Paul,] he rose up, & [went] into the city. And the next day, [Paul left] with Barnabas to [to go to] Derbe. And when they had preached the Gospel to that city, & had taught many, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, & Antioch again. |
And [warning] the disciples, to continue in the faith, [to] [establish their] souls, [a.k.a lives, so] that we [may endure] much tribulation, & enter into the Kingdom of God. [Revelation 2:10-11 [Don't] fear [any] of those things, [that] you [shall] suffer. [Watch,] the devil shall cast some of you into prison, [so] that you may be tried, [a.k.a. tested,] & you shall have tribulation 10 days. You, be faithful [until] death, & I will give you a crown of Life. He, [who has] an ear, let him hear what the Spirit [says] to the churches. He, [who overcomes] shall not be hurt [by] the 2nd death.] |
And when they had prayed with fasting, & had ordained, [a.k.a. appointed,] elders [for them] in every church, they [committed] them to the Lord, [in] Whom they believed. |
And they came to Pamphylia, after they had [crossed] throughout Pisidia. And when they had preached the Word [of God] in Perga, they went down to [Italy.] And [from there] [they] sailed to Antioch, from [where] they [first] had been recommended for the work which they fulfilled, [a.k.a. completed, by] the grace of God. |
And when they [had:] come, & had gathered the church together, they [explained in detail] [about] all that God had done [for] them, & *how [God] had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. [Isaiah 49:6 *And [God] said, It is a [little] thing that You [should] be My servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, & restore the preserved, [a.k.a. saved,] of Israel. I also will give You for a Light to the Gentiles, [so] that You [may] be My Salvation unto the [ends] of the earth.] |
And they [stayed] there [a] long time with the disciples. |
