Paul is Taken to Athens & Speaks to Them About the Lord God |
Acts 17:1-34 The Acts of the Apostles [in Smaller Chunks] |
Now, when they passed through Amphipolis & Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where the synagogue of the Jews was. And [like Paul's custom] was, [for] 3 Sabbath Days, [he] went in to them, & reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, opening [them,] & alleging, that [it was necessary that] Christ must have suffered & [Christ] [rose] again from the dead. [Luke 24:46-48 And [Jesus Christ] said to them, It is written [like this,] & [like this] it [was necessary] [for] Christ to suffer, & to rise from the dead the third day. [So,] that repentance & remission, [a.k.a. forgiveness] of sins, should be preached in His Name, among all nations, beginning [in] Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.] |
And that this Jesus, Whom I preach to you, Is Christ. And some of them believed: a [large] multitude devout, [a.k.a. religious,] Greeks, & [many leaders] of the women, [associated] with Paul & Silas. But the Jews [who didn't believe,] [were] moved with envy, took [some] lewd, [a.k.a. vulgar,] fellows [with] [low morals,] to [themselves,] & gathered a [crowd,] & set all the city [in] an uproar. |
And [they] [attacked Jason's] house, & [tried] to bring them out to the people. And when they [didn't find] them, they [dragged] Jason & [some] brethren to the [city's] rulers, crying [out,] These, [who] have turned the world upside down, [have] also come [here.] |
And all these, whom Jason [has] received, [a.k.a. welcomed or accepted,] do [what] is contrary, [a.k.a. contradicts,] the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, One Jesus. And when they heard these things, they troubled, [a.k.a. harassed,] the rulers of the city & the people. |
And when they had taken security, [a.k.a. collateral, from] Jason, & the [rest,] they let them go. And the brethren, [a.k.a. fellow-believers,] immediately sent Paul & Silas away [at] night, to Berea. |
[When,] [they came there,] went into the [Jews'] synagogue. These [Jews] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that, [their minds readily] received the Word [of God,] & searched the Scriptures daily, [to find out] whether those things were [true.] Therefore, many of them believed; & also [may honorable] women & men, [who] were Greeks, [a.k.a. Gentiles.] |
But when the Jews of Thessalonica [knew] that the Word of God was preached [by] Paul [in] Berea, they also came [there,] & stirred up the people. And then, the brethren sent Paul away immediately, [like] to go to the sea, but Silas & [Timothy] still [stayed] there. |
And [those, who guided Paul,] brought him to Athens. And Silas & [Timothy received] a [command] to come to [Paul] with speed, & they [left.] Now, while Paul waited for them [in] Athens, his spirit was stirred [within] him, when he saw the city [was] [totally engaged] [in] idolatry. [Psalm 115:4-8 Their idols are silver & gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they [don't] speak. They have eyes, but they [don't] see. They have ears, but they [don't] hear. They have noses, but they [don't] smell. They have hands, but they [don't touch.] They have feet, but they [don't] walk. Neither [do] they speak through their throat. [Those who] make them, are [similar] to them; & so is everyone, [who trusts] in them.] |
Therefore, [Paul disputed] with the Jews in the synagogue, & with the devout [people,] & in the market daily with [those, who] met with him. [Acts 13:43 Now, when the congregation was broken up, [a.k.a. dispersed,] many of the Jews & religious [converts] followed Paul & Barnabas, who, [spoke] to them, persuaded them to continue in [God's] grace.] |
Then, [some Epicurean] & Stoic philosophers [confronted Paul.] And some said, What will this babbler say? Some others [said,] He seems to be [someone, who puts] forth strange gods; because he preached to them [about] Jesus, & the resurrection. |
And they [seized Paul,] & brought him to Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, [of which] you now [speak?] For you [deliver some] strange things to our ears. Therefore, we [want] [to] know what these things mean. (For all the Athenians, & strangers, [a.k.a. foreigners, who] were there, spent their time, [doing] nothing else, [than] to either tell, or to [listen] [to] some new thing.) |
Then, Paul stood in the [middle] of Mars Hill, & said, I [realize] that you are too superstitious in all things. For as I passed by, & [saw] your devotions, & I found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD, whom you ignorantly worship. I [will] declare Him to you. God, [Who] made the world, & all things [in it.] [Since] He is Lord of heaven & earth, & [doesn't] dwell in temples made [by] hands. Neither is He worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, [since God gives] life & breath to all, & all things. |
And [God] has made all nations of men of one blood, to dwell on the [surface] of the earth. And [He] has determined the times [for things to happen long,] before [the time] appointed. [Isaiah 46:9-10 Remember the [previous] things of old. For I Am God, & there is [no other.] I Am God, & there [are] none like Me, Declaring the end, from the beginning, & [declaring] from the ancient times, the things that aren't done yet, saying, My counsel shall stand, & I will do all My pleasure.] |
And [He establishes] the [boundaries] of their habitation. [Deuteronomy 32:7-8 Remember the days of old, & consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, & he will [declare] to you; & your elders, & they will tell you. When the Most High divided their inheritance [to] all the nations, & when He separated the sons of Adam, & set the [boundaries] of the people, according to the number of the children, [a.k.a. people,] of Israel.] |
[So] that they should seek [for] the Lord, if [perhaps] they might feel after Him. And find Him, though He [isn't] far from everyone of us. [Job 12:25 They grope in the darkness without Light, & He [makes] them stagger like a [drunk] man.] |
For [through] Him, we: live, move, & have our being. Also, as certain as our own poets have said, For we are also His offspring. [However, since] we are the offspring of God, we [shouldn't] think that the Godhead, [a.k.a. God's divine nature,] is [similar] to: gold, silver, stone, or [carved] art [with] man's [devices, a.k.a. tools.] [Deuteronomy 29:17-18 And we have seen their abominations, & their idols which were among them, [made of:] wood, stone, silver, & gold. Lest there should be [any] man or woman, or family or tribe among you, whose heart [turns] away from the Lord our God, this day to go & serve the gods of these nations. Lest there should be among you a root, that [bears] gall & wormwood.] |
And God winked at the times of this ignorance; but now [commands] all men everywhere to repent. [Acts 8:22 Therefore, repent of this, your wickedness, & pray [to] God, if perhaps the [thoughts] of your heart, might be forgiven you.] |
Because [God] has appointed a day, in which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man, Whom He has ordained; [of which God has] given assurance to all men, that He has raised Him from the dead. [Acts 2:22-24 You men of Israel, hear these Words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man approved [by] God [through] Miracles, Wonders, & Signs, among you, which God did by Him, in the midst of you, as you, yourselves, also know. [Jesus Christ,] being delivered [to] the council [determined] by [God's foresight.] *And by wicked hands, you have taken, crucified, & [killed,] Whom God [has] raised up. Having [loosened] the pangs of death, because it wasn't possible that He should be [held] [by death.] |
And when they heard [about] the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. And others said, We will hear you again [about] this matter. So, Paul [left] from among them. [However, some] men [joined with Paul,] & believed. Among [those were:] Dionysius, the Areopagite; a woman named Damaris; & others with them. |
