About Eating Food Offered to Idols |
1 Corinthians 8:1-13 Paul's 1st Epistle to the Corinthians [in Smaller Chunks] |
Now, [about] things offered to idols. We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge [puffs] up, [a.k.a. makes prideful or conceited,] but charity [edifies, a.k.a. builds up or encourages.] And if any man [thinks] he [knows] anything, [still] he [knows] nothing, [like] he ought to know. But if any man [loves] God, the same [person] is known [by] God. [Revelation 3:5-6 He [who overcomes,] the same [person] shall be clothed in white [garments.] And I won't blot out his name [from] the Book of Life, but I will confess his name [in front of] My Father, & His Angels. He, [who] has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit [says] to the churches.] |
Therefore, [about] the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, & that there is [no] other God, but One. [Isaiah 37:16 O Lord of Hosts, God of Israel, [Who] dwells between the cherubims, [a.k.a. 2 angelic statues over the Ark of the Covenant.] You [are] God, even You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: You [have] made heaven & earth.] |
For there [are what] are called gods, whether in heaven or [on] earth ([like] there are many gods, & many lords.) [Psalm 82:6-7 I have said, You are gods; & all of you are children of the Most High. But you shall die like men, & shall fall like one of the princes.] |
But to us, there is [only] One God, the Father, of Whom all things are, [a.k.a. exist,] & we [live] in Him, & One Lord Jesus Christ, by Whom all things [exist,] & we [exist] [through] Him. [John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, [a.k.a. Jesus Christ,] & the Word was with God, & the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him. And not anything that was made, was made without Him.] |
[However] there isn't that knowledge in every man. For with conscience of the idol, [a.k.a. respect to it,] some [until] this hour eat it [like] a thing offered to an idol; & their [consciences] being weak, [are] defiled. [1 Corinthians 10:28 But if any man [says] to you, This is offered in sacrifice to idols, [don't] eat [it,] for [the] sake [of who told you,] & for [conscience's] sake. For the earth & [its] fulness [are] the Lord's.] |
But meat, [a.k.a. food,] [doesn't commend] us, [a.k.a. glorify us,] to God. For neither, if we eat, are we better; & if we [don't] eat, are we worse [off.] But [pay attention,] lest by any means, this liberty, [a.k.a. freedom,] of yours [becomes] a stumbling-block to [those, who] are weak. [Romans 14:15-17 But if your brother [is] grieved with your meat, [a.k.a. food,] now you [aren't following] charitably. [Don't] destroy him for whom Christ died, with your [food.] Then, let not your good be spoken of [as evil.] For the Kingdom of God isn't [food] & drink; but righteousness, peace, & joy in the Holy Ghost, [a.k.a. Holy Spirit.] |
For if any man, [who has] knowledge [of the Lord God,] [sees] you sit [to eat] in the idol's temple, [won't] the conscience of him, [who] is weak be emboldened, [a.k.a. encouraged,] to eat those things [that] are offered to idols. And through your knowledge, shall the weak brother, for whom Christ died, perish? [Romans 14:20-21 For meat [doesn't] destroy the work of God. Indeed, all things are pure; but it is evil for the man who [eats] [it] with offense, [a.k.a. deliberately.] It is neither good to eat flesh, [a.k.a. meat,] nor to drink wine, nor [do] anything [by which] your brother [stumbles;] is offended; or is made weak.] |
But when you sin [like this] against your brethren, [a.k.a. fellow-believers,] & wound their weak [consciences,] you sin against Christ. [Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer & say to them, [Truly,] I say to you, [In that,] you have done it to one of the least of these My brethren, you have done it to Me.] |
[For this reason] if meat, [makes] my brother offend, I [won't] eat [any] flesh while the world [stands,] lest I make my brother offend. [Romans 14:14 I know & I'm persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean, [in & of] itself; [except] to him, [who regards] anything to be unclean, & to him it is unclean.] |
