John the Baptist's Disciples Come & See Jesus' Miracles to Tell John |
Luke 7:1-50 The Gospel According to Luke [in Smaller Chunks |
Now, when [Jesus] had [finished] all His sayings, in [front of] the audience of people [listening,] [Jesus went] into Capernaum. And a [particular] Centurion's servant, who was dear to him, was slick, & ready to die. And when he heard [about] Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to [Jesus, begging] Him, that He would come & heal his servant. |
And when they came to Jesus, they [immediately urged Jesus,] saying, That he, for whom [Jesus] should do this, was worthy. For he [loves] our nation, & he [has] built us a synagogue. Then, Jesus went with them. |
And when [Jesus] wasn't far from the house, the Centurion sent friends to [Jesus,] saying to Him, Lord, [don't] trouble Yourself: for I'm not worthy, that You [should] enter under my roof. [For this reason,] I neither thought myself worthy to come to You. But [just] say [the] Word, & my servant shall be healed. |
For I also am a man [put] under authority, & [have] soldiers under me. And I say to one, Go, & he [goes;] & to another, Come, & he [comes.] And [say] to my servant, Do this, & he [does] it. |
*When Jesus heard these things, He [marveled] at him, & turned [Himself around,] & said to the people, [who] followed Him, I say to you, I haven't found [such a] great, [a.k.a. large or strong,] faith, no, not in Israel. And [those, who] were sent, [returned] to the house, & found the servant whole, [who] had been sick. |
[Psalm 107:19-20 *They cry [out] to the Lord in their trouble, & He [saves] them out of their distresses. He sent His Word, & healed them, & delivered them from their [destruction.] |
And it [happened] the [following] day, that [Jesus] & many of His disciples & [a large crowd,] went with Him, into a city called Nain. Now, when [Jesus] came [close] to the gate of the city, [saw] there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, & she was a widow. |
And [many] of the people [from] the city [were] with her. And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her, & said to her, [Don't] weep. And [Jesus] came & touched the bier, [a.k.a. frame holding the deceased.] And [those, who carried] him, stood still. |
*And [Jesus] said, I say to you, young man, Arise. And he, [who] was dead, sat up, & began to speak. [Isaiah 25:7-8 And in this mountain, He will destroy the covering [of the] face of all people, & the [veil] that is spread over all the nations. He will swallow up death in victory. And the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces. And He shall take away from off all the earth, the [disgrace] of Hs people; for the Lord [has] spoken it.] |
And [Jesus] delivered him to his mother. And fear, [a.k.a. respect,] came [upon] all there. And they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet [has] risen up among us, & That God has visited His people. And this rumor of [Jesus] went [out] throughout all Judaea, [a.k.a. Judea,] & throughout all the region [around it.] |
And [John's] disciples [declared] all these things to [John the Baptist.] And John, calling 2 of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, [Are] You He, [Who] should come? Or [do] we look for another? |
*When the men [came] to [Jesus,] they said, John [the] Baptist [has] sent us to You, saying, [Are] You He, [Who] should come? Or [do] we look for another? [Micah 5:2 *But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, [although] you [are] little among 1,000's of Judah, [still] He, [Who] is the Ruler in Israel, shall come out of you to Me. Whose goings [out] have been [foretold] from old, & from everlasting.] |
*And in that same hour, [Jesus] cured many [from] their infirmities, [a.k.a. afflictions,] plagues, & evil spirits, [a.k.a. demons.] [Psalm 103:2-4 *Bless the Lord, O my soul, & [don't] forget all His benefits: Who [forgives] all your [sins;] Who [heals] all your diseases; Who [redeems] your life from destruction; Who [crowns] you with loving kindness & tender mercies.] |
*And [Jesus] gave sight to many, [who] were blind. [Isaiah 29:18 *And [on] that day, the deaf will hear the Words of the Book, & the eyes of the blind shall see out of [cloudiness,] & out of darkness.] |
*Then, Jesus answering said to them, Go [on] your way, & tell John what things you have seen & heard; & how the blind: see, the lame: walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf: hear, the dead are raised, & the gospel is preached to the poor. And blessed is he, [whoever] shall not be offended [by] Me. |
[Isaiah 11:1-4 *And there shall come forth a Rod out of the stem of Jesse, & a Branch shall grow out of his roots. *And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him: the Spirit of wisdom & understanding, the Spirit of [advice & strength,] the Spirit of knowledge & of the fear, [a.k.a. respect] of the Lord. |
And shall make Him of [immediate] understanding in the fear, [respect] of the Lord. And He shall not judge [according] [to what] His eyes [see.] Neither [shall He] [reprimand according] [to what] His ears [hear.] |
But He shall judge the poor with righteousness, & shall [repay] the meek, [a.k.a. humble,] of the earth with equity. And He shall [strike] the earth with the rod [from] His mouth, & He shall slay the wicked, with the breath of His lips.] |
And when [John's] messengers [had left, Jesus] began to speak to the people [about] John, What [did] you [go] out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what [did] you [go] out to see? A man clothed in soft [garments?] |
[Look, those, who] are [clothed] gorgeously, & live delicately, are in kings' courts. *But what [did] you [go] out to see? A prophet. [Yes,] I say to you, & much more than a prophet. This is he, of whom it is written [in the Scriptures,] [Watch,] I send My messenger before Your face, [who] shall prepare the way before You. |
[Isaiah 40:3-5 *The voice of him, [who cries] [out] in the wilderness, Prepare you the way of the Lord, & make straight in the desert, a highway for our God. Every valley shall be [raised] & every mountain & hill shall be made low. And the crooked [places,] shall be made straight, & the rough places [shall be made] [smooth.] And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, & all flesh shall see it together. For the mouth of the Lord [has] spoken it.] |
For I say to you, Among those [who] are born of women, there isn't [any] greater prophet than John the Baptist. But he, [who] is least in the Kingdom of God, is greater than he. |
And all the people & publicans, [a.k.a. tax collectors,] who heard [Jesus,] [having] [been] [previously] baptized with the baptism of John, justified God. But the Pharisees & lawyers, not being baptized [by John,] rejected the [instruction from] God, against themselves, [a.k.a against their own best interests.] |
And the Lord said, Then, [to what] shall I [compare] the men of this generation? And to what are they [similar?] They are [similar] to children sitting in the marketplace, & calling one another, & saying, We have piped to you, & you haven't danced. |
We have mourned [for] you, & you haven't wept. For John the Baptist, came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine; & you say, [John has] a [demon.] [Luke 1:15 For [John] shall be great in the sight of the Lord, & shall [not] drink wine, nor strong drink. And he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, [a.k.a. Holy Spirit,] even from his mother's womb.] |
The Son of Man [has] come eating & drinking. And you say, [Look,] a Man [Who is] a [glutton,] & [an alcoholic,] a friend of publicans & sinners! [Luke 15:2 And the Pharisees & scribes [grumbled,] saying, this Man, receives, [a.k.a. welcomes,] sinners, & [eats] with them.] |
[And yet,] wisdom is justified [by] all of [wisdom's] children. And one of the Pharisees desired that [Jesus] would eat with him. And [Jesus] went into the Pharisee's house, & sat down to [dinner.] And, behold, in the city, a woman, [who] was a sinner, brought an alabaster box of ointment, [a.k.a. oil,] when she knew that Jesus sat at [dinner] in the Pharisee's house. |
And [the woman] stood weeping behind [Jesus at] His feet, & began to wash His feet with tears, & [wiped] them with the hairs of her head, & kissed [Jesus'] feet, & anointed them with the ointment. |
Now, when the Pharisee, [who] had [invited Jesus] saw it, he [said] within himself, If this Man were a prophet, he would have known, who & what [type] of woman this is, [who] touches Him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus [responded,] & said to him, Simon, I have [something] to say to you. |
And [Simon] said, Master, [a.k.a. Teacher, continue speaking.] There was a certain creditor, [who] had two debtors. The one owed 500 pence, & the other [owed] 50. And when they had nothing to pay, frankly, he forgave them both. Therefore, tell Me, which of them will love him [the] most? |
Simon answered & said, I suppose that he, to whom, he forgave [the] most. And [Jesus] said to [Simon,] You have [correctly] judged. And [Jesus] turned to the woman, & said to Simon, [Do] you [see] this woman? I entered into your house, & you [didn't give] Me [any] water for My feet. But she [has] washed My feet with tears, & wiped them with the hairs of her head. |
You [gave] me no kiss: but this woman [has] not ceased to kiss My feet, since the time I came in. You didn't anoint My head with ointment, but this woman [has] anointed My feet with ointment. [For this reason,] I say to you, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much. |
But to whom little is forgiven, the same [loves] little. *And [Jesus] said to her, Your sins are forgiven. [Psalm 34:18 *The Lord is [near] to [those, who have] a broken heart; & [saves] such [that have] a contrite, [a.k.a. repentant] spirit.] |
And [those, who] sat at [dinner] with [Jesus] began to say within themselves, Who is this that [can] also forgive sins? And [Jesus] said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace. |
