Worshipers of Diana's Shrine Didn't Approve of Paul Teaching About Christ |
Acts 19:1-41 The Acts of the Apostles [in Smaller Chunks] |
And it [happened,] that while Apollos was [in] Corinth, Paul passed through the upper coasts & came to Ephesus, & [found some] disciples. [Paul] said to them, Since you have believed, have you received the Holy Ghost, [a.k.a. Holy Spirit?] And they said to [Paul,] We haven't heard, whether there [even] [is] any Holy Ghost. |
And [Paul] said to them, Then, to what were you baptized? And they said, To John's baptism. Then, Paul said, [Truly,] John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people, that they should believe [in] Him, that is [in] Jesus Christ, [Who would] come after him. |
When they heard this, they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus. And there were about 12 men, & when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost, [a.k.a. Holy Spirit,] came upon them. And they [spoke] with [tongues, a.k.a. languages,] & prophesied. |
And [Paul] went into the synagogue, & [spoke] boldly for the [period] of 3 months, disputing & persuading the things [related] [to] the Kingdom of God. [Acts 17:2-3 And [like Paul's custom] was, [for] 3 Sabbath Days, went to them, & reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, opening [them,] & alleging that [it was necessary that] Christ must have suffered. And [Christ] [rose] again from the dead. And that this Jesus, Whom I preach to you, Is Christ.] |
But when [the hearts of] [various] [ones of them,] were hardened & [didn't believe,] but [they] [spoke] evil of that Way, before the multitude. [John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I Am the Way, the Truth, & the Life. No man [comes] to the Father, [except] by Me.] |
[Paul left] from them, & [removed] the disciples, & [reasoned] daily in the school of one, Tyrannus. And this continued [over] the space of 2 years, so that all [those, who] dwelt in Asia, [of:] both Jews & Greeks, [a.k.a. Gentiles,] heard the Word of the Lord Jesus. |
And God [brought about] special miracles [at] [the] hands of Paul. [Acts 14:8-10 And a certain man [in] Lystra sat there, [lame] in his feet, who had never walked, being a cripple from [birth.] The same [man] heard Paul speak; who [steadily watched the man,] & [realized] that he had faith, to be healed. *[Paul] said with a loud voice, Stand upright on your feet. And he leaped [up] & walked.] |
So, that handkerchiefs or aprons, [that touched] [Paul's] body, were brought to the sick, & the diseases [left] from them, & the evil spirits, [a.k.a. demons,] went out of them. Then, [some] of the [wandering] Jews, [who were] exorcists, took [it] upon [themselves,] to call [on] the Name of the Lord Jesus, over [those, who] had evil spirits, saying, We [command] you by Jesus, Whom Paul [preaches.] |
And one Sceva, [who was] a Jew & chief priest, [had] 7 sons, [who] did [this.] And the evil spirit, [a.k.a. demon,] answered & said, I know Jesus, & I know Paul, but who are you? And the man [who] [had] the evil spirit, leaped on them, & [overpowered] & prevailed against them, so that they fled out of the house naked & wounded. |
And this was known to all the Jews & also [the] Greeks [living in] Ephesus. And fear fell on all [of] them, & the Name of the Lord was magnified. And many [who] believed, came & confessed [their sins] & deeds. Also, many of them, [who] used curious arts, brought their books together, & burned them, [in front of] all men. [2 Kings 21:6 And [Manasseh] made his son pass through the fire; & observed times, [a.k.a. horoscopes, & astrology;] used enchantments; dealt with familiar spirits & wizards. [Manasseh brought about] much wickedness in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.] |
And they counted the [value] of [the books they burned], & found [the value:] 50,000 pieces of silver. So, the Word of God grew mightily & prevailed. After these things [happened,] Paul [intended within] [his] spirit, to go to Jerusalem, [after] he had passed through Macedonia & Achaia, saying, After I have been there, I must also see [the brethren, a.k.a. fellow- believers in] Rome. |
So, [Paul] sent 2 of [those, who] ministered to him, into Macedonia, Timotheus, [a.k.a. Timothy,] & Erastus. But [Paul] stayed in Asia, for [some time.] And the same time, a [major] stir, [a.k.a. commotion,] arose about that Way. [Luke 24:46-48 And [Jesus] said to them, It is written [like this,] & [like this] it [was necessary] [for] Christ to suffer, & to rise from the dead the third day. [So,] that repentance & remission, [a.k.a. forgiveness] of sins, should be preached in His Name, among all nations, beginning [in] Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.] |
For [some] man named Demetrius, a silversmith, [who] made silver shrines for Diana, brought [much] [financial] gain to the craftsmen, whom [Demetrius] called together with the workmen of [similar occupations.] [Psalm 115:4-8 Their idols are silver & gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they [don't] speak. They have eyes, but they [don't] see. They have ears, but they [don't] hear. They have noses, but they [don't] smell. They have hands, but they [don't touch.] They have feet, but they [don't] walk. Neither [do] they speak through their throat. [Those who] make them, are [similar] to them; & so is everyone, [who trusts] in them.] |
And said, Sirs, that we have our wealth by this craft, [a.k.a. trade.] [Also,] you see & hear, that not [only] in Ephesus, but throughout almost all [of] Asia, Paul [has] persuaded & turned away [many] people, saying that they [aren't] gods, [that] are made with hands. [Revelation 9:20-21 And the rest of the men, [who] weren't killed by these plagues, & [still didn't] repent of the works [made] [by] their hands, [so] that they shouldn't worship [demons,] & idols of: gold; silver; brass; stone; & wood, which can neither see, hear, nor walk. Neither [did] they [repent] of their: murders, sorceries, fornication, [a.k.a. adultery,] nor their thefts.] |
So, not only is our craft in danger [of] [being brought to nothing, but also that the great goddess, Diana, whom all Asia & the world worshiped, should be despised, & her magnificence should be destroyed. And when they heard these [things,] they were full of wrath, [a.k.a. rage,] & cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. And the whole city was filled with confusion. |
And having [already] caught, [a,k.a. seized,] Gaius & Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, & Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord, [a.k.a. united as one,] into the theatre. And when Paul would have entered [into] the [crowd of] people, the disciples [wouldn't allow] him. |
And [some] of the [leaders] of Asia, [who] were [Paul's] friends, sent to him, [pleading] that he wouldn't [venture] himself into the theatre. Therefore, some cried [out] 1 thing, & some another. For the assembly was confused, & the [majority didn't know why] they [had] come together. |
And they [pulled] Alexander out of the multitude, & the Jews [pushing] him forward. And Alexander [motioned] with [his] hand, & would have made his defence [known] to the people. But when they knew that [Alexander] was a Jew, [over] the [period] of about 2 hours, [they] cried out with one voice, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. |
And when the [town's clerk] had [quieted] the people, he said, You men of Ephesus, what man is there, [who doesn't know] that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, & [a worshiper] of the image which fell down from Jupiter? [Psalm 96:5 For all the gods of the nations are idols. But the Lord made the heavens.] |
Then, [since] these things can't be spoken against, you [should] be quiet, & do nothing rashly, [a.k.a. recklessly.] For you have brought these men [here, who] are neither [thieves] of churches, [a.k.a. temples,] nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. |
[For this reason,] if Demetrius, & the craftsmen, [who] are with him, have a matter against any man, the [courts are] open, & there are deputies. Let them [prosecute] one another. |
But if you [inquire about] other matters, it shall be [decided] in a lawful assembly. For we are in danger [of] [being] called in question [about] today's uproar. [Since,] there [is] no [reason, by which] we may give an account of this [large crowd.] And when he had spoken [this,] he dismissed the assembly. |
